The Day of Casinga

 Casinga Day, observed on May 4th, is a significant day of remembrance in Namibia, commemorating a tragic event that took place in 1978 during the struggle for independence from South African colonial rule. On this day, a military operation by the South African forces targeted a camp in Casinga, located in Angola, where many Namibians, primarily refugees and members of the liberation movement SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization), had gathered. 

The operation resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, including women and children, marking one of the bloodiest episodes in the Namibian struggle for freedom. The devastation left a profound scar on Namibian history, serving as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the fight for independence.

Today, as Namibians gather to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day, it is essential to reflect on the resilience and courage of all those who fought for the country's freedom. Casinga Day not only serves as a moment of mourning but also as a day to honor the legacy of those who sacrificed so much for a better future.
